In my Introduction to Printmaking class, I delved into the realm of intaglio printing, a process involving incising an image onto the surface of a metal plate. The plates utilized were made of photopolymer and copper, emphasizing the creation of lines and space beneath the surface.
The focus of this series revolves around the concept of "hide and seek," employing shape and color to craft images. I chose to center my attention on the abandoned subway in Rochester. Given that many residents are unaware of its historical significance, I aimed to shed light on this structure through intaglio printing. The prints in this series form a timeline depicting the subway's history.
Progressing from left to right, the series covers the "Idea of a Grand City" (1919), the "Construction of the Subway" (1920), the "Subway in Operation" (1927), the "City's Economic Decline after WW2" (1945), the "Abandonment of the Subway" (1956), "Home for the Curious, the Homeless, and Graffiti Artists" (1960-2020), and, finally, a glimpse into a "Possible Future" (2022).
